Africa Energy Indaba opens up nuclear debate with its
2016 Nuclear Forum
There is growing interest in nuclear energy generation from African countries, in particular South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. South Africa’s nuclear plans include adding 9,600 MW of nuclear power to the existing 40,000 MW current generation capacity. Nigeria and Kenya both aim to add 4,000 MW of nuclear power to existing relatively low national grid capacity.
However, while many see nuclear energy as a cure-all for Africa’s energy constraints, the costs of building a nuclear power station and the time it will take to build it has others cautioning against following a nuclear build programme.

Globally, the nuclear power sector is in decline, particularly post-Fukushima. Construction delays, escalating costs, changing financial models, heightened secrecy and lack of public consultation are all long-standing features of an industry which operates in a global context where Renewable Energy is flourishing.

There is no doubt that Africa remains open for nuclear power development. Although nuclear is capital-intensive and takes time to come online, it can make sense for Africa if the business model is correct and the process is carefully managed with the right stakeholders.

The potential is evident, but today’s leading energy experts believe the issues need to be openly debated.

The Nuclear Forum session will be taking place on Tuesday, 16th February 2016 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg as part of the annual Africa Energy Indaba.

In previous years, the Nuclear Forum has run as a side-event to the main Energy Indaba conference. In 2016, the Nuclear Forum joins the main Energy Indaba as a lead session on day 1. This will open up the nuclear debate to a wider audience of energy and nuclear stakeholders from across the continent.

The Nuclear Forum has been created to ensure that all energy stakeholders playing a role in shaping Africa’s nuclear future will decide on the best way forward. The Nuclear Forum will look at the generation of nuclear power from an African perspective.

Key issues to be discussed include:
  • The pros and cons of developing nuclear power in Africa
  • The prohibitive of nuclear investment in Africa
  • The timeline for building nuclear power plants in Africa
  • Skills development, education and training for a nuclear build programme
  • Safety and reliability of nuclear power plants
  • Maintenance and shelf-life of nuclear power plants
